WIP… What I have been up to….

oh how time gets away from me……….
seems like forever since i have done a post.  which it has been awhile.  sorry.  i have been busy with all of the holiday stuff.  i will do my best to get you caught up on what i have been working on.
but first.  some things that have come my way.
like this box.

from Moda.  yep.  Moda did the 12 days of Christmas & i won one of the days.

i won a layer cake of Half Moon Modern.  it came all tied up with a pretty bow.  i love this line of fabric now & i will be getting more of it.

the Renegades got together & we had our Christmas party a couple of weeks ago.  funny we all made our gifts for each other this year.  i made embroidered sweatshirts for each of us.  i forgot to take a pic so i will do that & put it in another post.

Denise made us these cute 3″x5″ notebook covers & also gave us a Starbucks card.

Lynette made us these etched wine glasses with a bag to put it in for when we go to quilt camp.  She also gave us a bottle of wine.
Sharon made us each one of these super cool oil cloth bags.  i love mine.  she also gave us the coolest gadget.

they were on our gift bags & i thought they were like a pin you would wear on your sweater or jacket only they are magnetic.

they are made of a ceramic material & you do wear them on your shirt.
however you put your pins on them when you are sewing.  super cool.  i love it.  maybe you have seen them before but i had not and i think its the neatest thing ever.  i used mine while i was doing my holiday sewing and i love it.  i think they are called ‘cling ons’.  funny i know.
so that is part of what i have been up to.  a little holiday cheer with the gals & a little holiday cheer from Moda.
come back for my next post which should be tomorrow to see some of the stuff that i made for gifts this year.
happy sewing.

WIP Wednesday

so what have i been working on.  i have been sewing & i have been unsewing which is something that we like to call ‘successful training’.  hahaha.

a couple of quilt camps ago a few people got on the jelly roll race car quilt kick.  at the time i did not.  i though about it & thought about it.  i thought of ways to change it up some.  make mine a little different.  i am a renegade after all.
in McCall i decided it was time to make the jelly roll race car quilt.
so, i took my jelly roll, trimmed the salvage edges & cut them in two.  instead of 40 strips i had 80.  instead of mitering the ends i butt seamed them.  then i started to sew the 1st seam.  my jelly roll has directional fabric in it.  i realized that if i put the quilt together like the instructions said that i would have snowmen standing on their heads.  i only did the 1 seam in McCall before we packed up & came home.
a few days of being at home & i decided to unsew that 1st seam.  all 800 inches of it.  for some reason i could not have my snowmen standing on their heads.  yes, i am crazy.  but, at least i admit it.

so, here it is.  my renegaded jelly roll race quilt.  if i was in a real race i would have been black flagged for going too slow.  i love that all of my snowmen are going the same way so if 1 stands on his head they all will be standing on their heads.
i have 2 borders to add to the quilt.  a narrow solid brown & then a wider print from the same line.

i make & sell handbags at a local artisan barn & they were out so last night i took these to the barn.  a little bit of variety.
for the camp in McCall i thought it would be nice if each of us brought fabric so i could sew up a pillow case to donate.  we got the fabric but the sewing up part didn’t happen until this past week.  they are washed & ready to be delivered.
lastly, i must share.  back in March or April when i saw Countdown to Christmas from Sweetwater i knew i wanted some.  so my friends who have a quilt shop near by ordered my a fat quarter bundle.  i has forgotten about it until i got the email explaining why i didn’t have it sooner.  no big deal.  i have no plans for it except to sit and look at it.  i love this fabric.
i hope everyone is having a productive week.

WIP Wednesday & A Giveaway!!!!

this week i am sharing what i got done while i was at the Renegade’s quilt camp in McCall this past weekend.  if you stick with me through the entire post you will see a giveaway at the bottom.  no jumping ahead.  there might be a quiz.

no, this is not mine.  Denise put this together at camp.  amazing i know.  she does beautiful work & is very talented.  she is also super nice so she shares her knowledge with the rest of us.

another Denise creation.  she started this at my house back in May & finished it up at camp with adding the boarders to it.

i made this quilt awhile back.  i quilted & bound it at camp.  i think i have about 13 quilts or so that need quilted.  at least one is done.

i used a studio dye cutter to cut the tumblers which went super quick.
i love the front but i also love the back.  its a modern twist on the back & i am beginning to love this look more & more.
i quilted & bound this baby quilt that i made at the previous camp.  i called this my WAG quilt.  i gave it to the gal today who asked me to make it for her & she loved it.

i took my serger to camp with me as well.  i made 9 pairs of pajama pants.  i can not show you all 9 pairs here because 7 of them are for gifts & some people do read my blog.  the 2 i am showing here are for me.  i have 1 more pair to make then i am done with pajama pants for awhile.

i put together this top at camp as well.  these blocks came from a block swap thing i did with some local quilters/friends.  our theme was a holiday or a season.  i picked Christmas.

an up close shot of my focus fabric.  i am pleased with how it turned out.  so add that to the list of quilts to be quilted.

i took my 2010 Modern Siggy Swap quilt to quilt while i was at camp.  i got it done but not without some challenges.  i spray basted it in the garage at camp. i then got Denise to look at it with me to talk about the quilting of it.  it was then that i discovered i had put the bottom row on wrong.  ugh.  so, i peeled back the quilt, unsewed the bottom row, fixed it & re-basted it.  yuck.

i used rainbow variegated thread for the quilting.  i just did swirls around each block.  this is a shot of the back of the quilt.  the quilting frames each siggy block.

i am very happy with how it turned out.  white is not a color that i normally use but for this i thought it was the right way to go.
so now for the $64,000 question.
do i wash it?  yes or no?
if i wash it then how?  or do i use special quilt washing soap?
i want to wash it but i am afraid of lightening some of the signatures or having some of them bleed.  someone said as long as its heat set i should be fine washing it.  i don’t know what to do.  i want the puckery look of a washed quilt but i don’t want to loose any of the signatures.
HELP
this is where i get your advice & you get a chance to win something fun.
my previous post was #200 for me & so i thought i should have a giveaway.  i am giving away 2 ‘countdown to christmas’ charm packs.

for 1 entry leave me a comment about washing my siggy quilt.  would you wash it?  if so how?  or any tips, tricks you may have for me regarding this issue.
for a 2nd entry blog, Tweet, Facebook or tell a friend about my giveaway & leave me a comment letting me know what you did.
so, that’s 2 chances to enter.  you must leave a comment for each item.  i will leave the giveaway open until 5:00 pm (pst) Monday the 17th.
so get out there & spread the word!!!!!!

a few Christmas gifts

i got a few Christmas gifts that i wanted to share with you all.
if you have been reading my blog for awhile then you know that i have a group of friends & we call ourselves the Renegade Quilters. it all started a couple of years ago on a trip to Sister’s & it has evolved from there. there are just 4 of us & we are always together at the various quilt camps, quilt shows & whatever else may strike our fancy.
this year for Christmas Lynette made us all these AWESOME notebook covers.
she personalized them with our initial of our 1st name. i totally love the embroidery on the A. below is some additional initials that have meaning to the 4 of us which she embroidered the full words on the back of the cover. next our year we were established & then on mine she put ‘founder’ because i named our group.
here is a shot of the inside of mine. Lynette personalized them for each of us based on our favorite colors as well as the additional initials that are specific to each of us.
we all acted like little girls on Christmas morning when we opened these.
thanks Lynette – great idea!
********
the next gift i want to share with you came from my friend Debbie. Debbie told me that when she saw this she thought of me right away.

it is going to be hung in the quilting cave.
********
last but not least comes the gift i got from Steph. i knew that she was making aprons this year for Christmas presents but i had no idea what mine would look like.
here it is….

sorry about the pic – hard to take one when you have no model.
i LOVE the fabric. all retro & fun.

my favorite is the girl reading in the chair which must have been Steph’s as well because that is what she used for the pocket on the apron.

now for the funny part.
i called Steph to thank her for it & to tell her how much i LOVE the fabric & that i want to get some of it. Steph says to me, “you should love it because you picked it out.” i was confused, no big surprise there. Steph explained that when we were in Sister’s this year i found said fabric & Steph told me that she would make my apron out of it for me. i still don’t remember that convo but i believe her & i am so happy because i really do LOVE this fabric & she even has some left over to share with me.
my apron arrived in this simple brown bag with the following tag on it.

its the same bag that i gave Steph her gift in last year. if you look close enough you can see where she whited out the ‘to’ & ‘from’ & swapped the names. so i guess we have a new tradition going on now. i will have to make sure that her gift next Christmas fits in this bag & get out my white out.
********
check back tomorrow because i am FINALLY posting the giveaway – it involves ‘jelly’ and a ‘roll’. & yes i know i am a total dork.

A little bit more of 2010

i can finally show you the last projects that i did for 2010. i got this pattern from Fat Quarterly’s holiday issue. its the lined boxed zipper bag however i made them larger. the finished size of mine are 11″x7 1/2″x3″. i made a total of 4 of these green ones with the ‘crafty’ themed fabric for my Renegades for Christmas.

then, i made this one for Steph because we watched Project Runway together this past season & once i found this fabric i knew i needed to make something out of it for her.

another little hobby of mine is collecting quotes especially inspirational quotes. i have a whole sketch book full of them that i have cut out of magazines & i also have a file on my computer full of the ones i have found online. i wanted to do something with them this year for Christmas gifts for a few people. so…….

this is what i came up with. i made little books using thick foam, fabric, mod podge, card stock & some rings to hold it all together.

i put 40 quotes in each book & each book contains the same quotes just in different order. i made 9 of these books & it was surprisingly easy.
i love the different colors of card stock – bright & cheery.

and, of course the book would not have been complete without a quote from Dave.

********

i also wanted to share with you a pattern i won on-line from Holly Hill Quilt Designs. i got to pick which one i wanted & so i picked this holiday themed one. not sure when i will get to it but i think it will be a fun one to make.

i also finished up the last block for my block swap box group. i am thinking that we will be doing it again however i don’t think we will start until March or so.

i have a long week ahead of me at work so who knows how much sewing i will get done. but, i will give it one heck of a try.

also, with all of the great sales going on online i will have some fabric purchases to share with you soon as well.

A year of travels

it has been a year of travel for me.
January 2010 took me to Washington DC
there i got to see Colin Powell speak.
do a little sight seeing.

& see Natalie Cole perform.

then the end of January was a trip to McCall for sewing & a mini trip to Boise to see my niece.

in March i went to a quilt camp at Palouse Divide Lodge – no pic of that.
in April i went back to Boise for more time with my niece.
also in April I went to St. Louis for work – no pic of that either.
in May it was the trip of a lifetime – all expenses paid – to the island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands.

on that trip we also sailed to Jost Van Dyke which is a British Virgin Island.
June was a month filled with doctors apts & several trips to Spokane.

in July a group of us headed to Sisters, OR for the Outdoor Quilt show.
i also went to Houston in July for work – no pics.
i was home the whole month of August except for the last few days when i made a quick trip to Boise to see DMB with my brother & SIL.
September kicked off with spending Labor Day weekend at the Gorge seeing DMB with Steph.

mid September i took a quick trip to Chicago to see DMB at Wrigley.

the end of September brought another quilt camp at Palouse Divide Lodge.

in October i went back to McCall with the Renegade’s for another quilt camp.

in November it was back to Palouse Divide Lodge for yet another quilt camp.
December was a trip to Seattle to see Dave & Tim as well as a quick weekend trip to Boise to see my family there – no pics of that trip.
********
looking back over 2010 i realize just how much i got to see & do & i am so grateful for the opportunities that my life brought me this past year.
i don’t expect to be traveling as much in 2011 however right out of the gate in January i am headed to Dallas for work. March will bring a trip to Boise to welcome my new niece. July we will head to Sister’s again. August to California for work. & i am hoping for some quilt camps scattered in there somewhere through out the year.

My other machine

over a year ago all of us Renegades were going to a quilt camp & i wanted to make pillow cases & pj pants. so my cousin, Lynette who has a serger offered to bring hers to camp for me to use. needless to say it was love a first sew. i serged up the pillow cases and pj pants in no time flat & made the decision that i was getting a serger. my friend Sharon used it as well and fell in love just like me. so a few months went by & we made the trek to the sewing machine store & both came home with a serger. we just got the basic model but it does everything that i want it to do and i LOVE it.
i had bought some home dec fabric 100 yrs ago for new living room pillows. well, i finally have serged up those pillows & i love them so much that i went & got some more fabric to make some more pillows.
i got more of the floral fabric – i love the bright orange, red and green flowers on it.
i think that a serger is a great machine to have. once you learn how to thread them you are good to go. everyone in my family got pj pants last year for Christmas & i am sort of leaning that way again this year…… maybe
********
on another note,
in 4 days i leave for my last quilt camp of the year. we are headed back to Palouse Divide Lodge & there will be 39 of us. this weekend i will be crazy busy prepping my projects for 5 solid days of sewing. i know that i will be making some bags but other then that i have nothing planned out. crazy i know…. me not planning…. what has come over me????

When It Rains

why is it when it rains it pours? that has been my life for the past few weeks. a couple quilt camps, an eye infection that required a few trips to the doc out of town, people on vacation from work, just life in general has been busier then normal for me – that’s why i haven’t been here blogging. but, today is your lucky day & i am here with pics from quilt camp this past weekend.
********
there were only 4 of us the aka Renegades & we headed to my aunt & uncle’s place in McCall, ID which is about 2 1/2 hrs from here. this is an annual trip for our group as its one of our members birthday. this week i received a thank you card from her with this on the front of it – a perfect depiction of our little group!
pic of the lake at McCall. its an awesome little resort town in the mountains.

pic of my aunt & uncle’s place that we stayed at.

so, for actual sewing that i got done at this camp…. at the last camp i did some quilting so at this camp i bound what i quilted at that camp & then i decided to quilt some more.

out of the 5 quilts above i quilted 2 of them in McCall the other 3 at the last camp and got the binding done on all of them in McCall. a couple of theses quilts are gifts – 1 for a little person & 1 for a dear friend who is recovering from back surgery.

this quilt i started about 1 1/2 yrs ago & got the top finished about 6 or 8 months ago. i quilted it in McCall with the advice and help of Denise the ‘quilting master’. i love how it turned out – i gave it to my mom for her birthday & she loves it. its her 1st Christmas quilt from me.

i love that the tassels on the hats are felted wool.

Fat Quarter Shop Mystery Designer BOM finally all done.

i pieced this at the last quilt camp & got it all finished in McCall

something i spent 1 1/2 days on but i can’t show it all just yet.

giant pincushions from Julie’s pattern. i actually filled them with crushed walnut shells – that was fun & they turned out way different then filling them with doll beads and stuffing.

did a block for my monthly block swap.
hope you like it Kitty.

got 5 rows of my hexi QA quilt put together – this is very time consuming but i am loving how its coming along.

life is starting to get back to normal for me – whatever normal is. i plan on spending sometime this weekend in the sewing cave maybe finishing up the hexi quilt & moving on to some Christmas gifts.

Randomness…..

this post is full of randomness….. sort of how my life was this past weekend

but, 1st & foremost this adorable little girl (my niece) is gonna be a big sister in March….. WHOOOOO HOOOOOOO so that means i’m gonna be an aunt again. we are all super excited & already planning a baby shower along with all of the quilty items i can make for the upcoming addition.

yesterday, Sunday, i spent here at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, WA helping with a fundraiser. this barn had been in my family for years until my great aunt & uncle donated it to the town of Uniontown 4 or 5 years ago. it is now home to several artists that have studio space there to work & sell their items. there is also a consignment shop in the barn where i sell my bags that i make. it was a lot of work yesterday but well worth it. the money raised will go to improvements on the barn.

i did get some sewing done on Saturday. i got the next 2 blocks made for Amy’s Simple Sampler Quilt Along.

this past week my friend Denise (a fellow Renegade) dropped this fabric off to me. its Christmas outfits to go with the paperdoll quilts that the 4 of us made last fall for the little girls in our families. Denise had seen this Christmas paperdoll fabric on vacation & was kind enough to get some for all of us as an i love you present.

thanks Denise – LOVE YA!

i found the fabric below at the Dahmen Barn on Saturday when we were setting up for the fundraiser. being green i had to have it. the best part was the price. 2 1/2 yds for $3 – amazing i know. people are always donating random items to the barn & this was one of them. lucky me!

mr mailman was kind to me this past week & brought me my siggy blocks. i totally LOVE everyone of them. i even took them to work & showed them off. i have been thinking about the layout for these & more then likely won’t get to put these together till quilt camp next month.

a SUPER HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Julie for all of her hard work in organzing, sorting & remailing the blocks back to all of us. YOU ROCK!!!

mr mailman was my friend a 2nd time last week when he brought me this big box of yumminess. Natalia of Piece N Quilt was selling her scraps & i was the lucky person who hit purchase 1st. this box is loaded with AWESOME stuff from fabric lines i have wanted to completed blocks. i have sorted it out some & i think i have 6 projects planned for her “scraps”.

i also got this block sewed up for my local block swap. i know its simple but that’s what i wanted so i could get it done quickly if need be.

last, but not least i have been trimming HST for Karrie’s Charm Pack QA. there are 150 of them & i think i am half way through trimming. then it will be on to step 2. i hope to get that done before Sunday when she posts step 3.

so a bunch of randomness this past week.

i hope to spend sometime in my sewing cave this week & knock out the final few blocks for a couple quilt alongs as well as start some quilting on another quilt. i need to make a list of quilt camp projects & start prepping those as well. i can’t believe camp will be here in about 5 weeks.

in about 2 weeks i will be heading to Boise to kick off my adventure of 6 DMB shows in 20 days. my younger brother & sil will be going to the Boise show with me & i am pretty sure that they will either disown me or have me committed after attending the show with me. all i ask is for him to wait 20 days to commit me…….

i hope you all have a great week whatever you may be doing!
