I am thankful for…….

i am thankful for my family on this Thanksgiving day. for me family includes my closest friends as well, i consider them family by choice not by blood. these are the friends that no matter where i am or what i need they would be there for me without question or judgement. i have been truly blessed with the friends in my life & they live all over the US & sometime in other countries. so, not only am i Thankful for them i am Grateful for them as well.

therefore, in order to keep in touch with my family/friends i am also Thankful for my laptop & cell phone & whoever came up with this technology. without these i would not have the capability to communicate with them on a moments notice. it is a two way street with me – i as well would be there for them at a moments notice.
lastly, i am Thankful for my ipod because it takes me out of the normal grind of daily life & back to center which i have needed a lot of lately. i think i would be lost without music & its something i listen to daily.

notice that my laptop, cell phone and ipod all have something in common? yep i am a green freak, but that is a whole other post.

happy turkey day wherever you may be.

An odd story

this post is so not quilting related but its such an odd story i have to share. last night was the rival college football game for the state of Idaho – Boise State University vs. University of Idaho & it was played in Moscow where the U of I is located – about 30 minutes from here.
********
before the game i sent my younger brother, who lives in the Boise area, a text that went something like “do you want to place a bet on who will win. haha. maybe we better bet on the score.” he came back with “yes betting on the score would be better.” i texted back with “52 to 14” & he came back with “64 to 21”. so the bet was on even though we had no idea what we are betting on.
keep in mind BSU is nationally ranked so no one in their right mind expected U of I to win & that was the case BSU beat U of I.
but what was the score you ask…..
BSU 52 U of I 14
Vandals bombed by Boise State was the sports headline in the Lewiston Morning Tribune today.
when i sent the text to my brother i just threw out a WAG (wild ass guess) i had no idea how accurate my WAG would be.
********
back to the world of sewing. i will be getting ready for quilt camp over the next couple of days. still have no plan, no idea what i am taking, maybe i will WAG it again or just punt & pray……

Today has been…..

today has been a challenging day for me. i know we all have them from time to time & for different reasons. my challenging day came from a lot of various things of which i will only share a couple of.
********
i am getting a door put on my office & my grandfather being the saver that he is has a whole collection of doors & not just 10 or 20 doors. we are talking upwards of a 100 or more doors. interior doors, exterior doors, doors in casings, just plain door slabs, old bar doors, steel doors, wood doors like i said a lot of doors. so me wanting something different decided to head to his door stash to find a unique door for my office. my dad & i take his pickup that has a large band saw in the back that needs to be dropped off at the repair shop after we pick out the door. now mind you, the band saw is big & heavy & tied in with bungee straps. as we leave the stop sign to turn the corner the bungee straps break & the band saw flips over the tail gate & lands in the middle of the road. thankfully no one was behind us & that there was some construction workers near by to help load the band saw back into the pickup which now really needed to go to the repair shop.
we then made it successfully to the stash of doors where i made my selection & went back to get into the pickup to go to the repair shop only to discover that my dad had locked the keys inside of the pickup………
you will just have to trust me that the day didn’t improve much from there.
i am leaving you with this picture that was taken by my great friend Stephanie at the Gorge in 2009. a double rainbow – it always puts a smile on my face when i look at this picture.
********
i am thankful that tomorrow is a new day & that we only have 1 large band saw.

The Colton Silo Project

not what you would normally see from me on my blog – right???
last night i was at a board meeting for The Dahmen Barn & at that board meeting there was discussion about a grain silo that my Grandfather & Great Uncle built in Colton, WA. there is a group of WSU architecture graduate students that have spent some time at the silo & now the silo is looked at as a piece of art & an educational piece. of course, my Grandfather & Great Uncle would have never called it that. to them it would be simply ‘a grain bin’.
The Colton Silo Project as it is called by these students is very interesting to check out & a different way of looking at a ‘grain bin’. below is a video of pictures taken every 30 seconds over a 24 hour period looking out through the top of the silo.

i found this video to very interesting just to watch it & think what all takes place in 24 hours of our lives as the sky above us changes.

this is the front of the invitation that the students have put together for an event at the silo this coming weekend. i love how they have set the silo in a harvested field & have the people looking at it.

********
i am also very proud of my Grandfather & Great Uncle to know that even though they are no longer with us the work they did years ago is admired & appreciated by people today.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival

this is the quilt that i have picked to share with you for Amy’s Blogger’s Quilt Festival. i have never shown this quilt on my blog before because i made it prior to even starting a blog. i made this quilt about 3 years ago when my SIL was pregnant with my 1st niece. my SIL is a HUGE butterfly fan & when they picked the theme of the nursery and it was pink & browns with cute little bugs in the bedding print i knew i had to make this quilt for them.

the pattern is all done in brights but that just wasn’t going to work for a little girl so i head to the Buggy Barn when i was in Spokane for the weekend and picked from their Sherbet line of fabric & started on this quilt. the background is all pieced squares & the butterflies & bugs are all appliqued on. i used my machine to do the applique and i love it. this quilt is hanging over the changing table in my niece’s room and she knows that ‘aunt anna’ made that for her.

totally love this pic of her.

of course she is bigger now and the joy of our lives.

********

the great thing about this quilt is that my brother & SIL are expecting another girl in March & so my new niece will get to share in the butterfly quilt as well. i can only hope that this quilt will be one of those that will get past on to the babies of future generations. as i type this i am beginning to wonder if i put a label on it or not. i will have to check with my SIL & if not that will get add to the to do list.

********

i hope you have enjoyed this quilt as much as i have & make sure & check out the other quilts over at Amy’s Creative Side for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

The Ups & Downs of Life

the last week or so has been very sad with the passing of some people who had touched our lives & we are left wondering why. anytime someone leaves the face of the earth expectantly i always turn inward and re-examine my life & my purpose for being here. i tend to stop & notice the simpler things more – from the moon on a clear night to the local high school football game going on down the road. i realize just how truly blessed i am to be living the life i have & i thank the Big Man upstairs everyday for that & the people in my life. taking time to pause & be grateful for what we have should be a daily occurrence for each of us.
*******
i was very grateful that this past weekend my BFF Shelly got to come to my house for a weekend of sewing & hanging out. Shelly missed our quilt camp so this was sort of a make up mini camp for us.
i got the above quilt quilted which had been prepped and ready for ummmm 3 months or so. i put the binding on it last night but no pic of that.

i made my bee block for Sue in my Bee Splendid group. these were something that i had never done before & it took me a bit to get it all figured out but once i did i really enjoyed making them.

i hope Sue likes them.

i also got the next block in the Fat Quarter Shop’s Mystery Designer BOM done.

the other HUGE item on my weekend to do list was to finish my Hexi QA quilt that i did from Julie’s website Jaybird Quilts. i had laid it out a couple months ago & cut all of the setting triangles. thank goodness i was smart enough to take a few pictures before i picked up all of the rows and labeled them. i ended up going back & looking at the pics to confirm a couple of the block placements.

so once i got the main center of the quilt together i decided that it needed something extra. the 1st thing i did was add a navy boarder & then i used a honeybun in Neptune to add a 1″ square pieced boarder around that & then finished it off with another navy boarder.

i am pretty much in LOVE with this quilt. if you have been reading my blog for awhile you know that i like to set blocks in darker fabric & this is my 1st quilt that i have done in navy. i loved doing the quilt along that Julie taught. it was easy to follow & yet it challenged me & i learned new things as we went along.

the next big question. how to quilt it???
i will quilt it myself & i have a few ideas but this is one of those quilts that will sit for awhile until i am 100% sure about what to do. i am sure you all have had those quilts & then one day it hits you & you know ‘yep’ that’s how i am suppose to quilt it.
*******
i am challenging myself to sewing every night this week. so i am signing off to head to the sewing cave to maybe start on a new bag for myself.
*******
happy sewing to you all.
PS – we find out Thursday if my SIL is having a boy or a girl. once we know let the sewing begin for the upcoming addition to the family.

Randomness…..

this post is full of randomness….. sort of how my life was this past weekend

but, 1st & foremost this adorable little girl (my niece) is gonna be a big sister in March….. WHOOOOO HOOOOOOO so that means i’m gonna be an aunt again. we are all super excited & already planning a baby shower along with all of the quilty items i can make for the upcoming addition.

yesterday, Sunday, i spent here at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, WA helping with a fundraiser. this barn had been in my family for years until my great aunt & uncle donated it to the town of Uniontown 4 or 5 years ago. it is now home to several artists that have studio space there to work & sell their items. there is also a consignment shop in the barn where i sell my bags that i make. it was a lot of work yesterday but well worth it. the money raised will go to improvements on the barn.

i did get some sewing done on Saturday. i got the next 2 blocks made for Amy’s Simple Sampler Quilt Along.

this past week my friend Denise (a fellow Renegade) dropped this fabric off to me. its Christmas outfits to go with the paperdoll quilts that the 4 of us made last fall for the little girls in our families. Denise had seen this Christmas paperdoll fabric on vacation & was kind enough to get some for all of us as an i love you present.

thanks Denise – LOVE YA!

i found the fabric below at the Dahmen Barn on Saturday when we were setting up for the fundraiser. being green i had to have it. the best part was the price. 2 1/2 yds for $3 – amazing i know. people are always donating random items to the barn & this was one of them. lucky me!

mr mailman was kind to me this past week & brought me my siggy blocks. i totally LOVE everyone of them. i even took them to work & showed them off. i have been thinking about the layout for these & more then likely won’t get to put these together till quilt camp next month.

a SUPER HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Julie for all of her hard work in organzing, sorting & remailing the blocks back to all of us. YOU ROCK!!!

mr mailman was my friend a 2nd time last week when he brought me this big box of yumminess. Natalia of Piece N Quilt was selling her scraps & i was the lucky person who hit purchase 1st. this box is loaded with AWESOME stuff from fabric lines i have wanted to completed blocks. i have sorted it out some & i think i have 6 projects planned for her “scraps”.

i also got this block sewed up for my local block swap. i know its simple but that’s what i wanted so i could get it done quickly if need be.

last, but not least i have been trimming HST for Karrie’s Charm Pack QA. there are 150 of them & i think i am half way through trimming. then it will be on to step 2. i hope to get that done before Sunday when she posts step 3.

so a bunch of randomness this past week.

i hope to spend sometime in my sewing cave this week & knock out the final few blocks for a couple quilt alongs as well as start some quilting on another quilt. i need to make a list of quilt camp projects & start prepping those as well. i can’t believe camp will be here in about 5 weeks.

in about 2 weeks i will be heading to Boise to kick off my adventure of 6 DMB shows in 20 days. my younger brother & sil will be going to the Boise show with me & i am pretty sure that they will either disown me or have me committed after attending the show with me. all i ask is for him to wait 20 days to commit me…….

i hope you all have a great week whatever you may be doing!
