Blogger’s Quilt Festival – Modern

me again.
two posts in one day.  don’t pass out.  its all ok.

in looking at my previous entries for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival i discovered that i had yet to enter one of my favorite quilts.

my Cartwheels quilt
pattern by Tula Pink
i have done blog posts about this quilt before but never for the Festival.  i am entering this in the ‘modern’ category of the Festival.

i started this quilt in a class at Sisters taught by Tula.  the class was a blast i took it with a friend of mine.  i used Tula’s Prince Charming line for the quilt and a background fabric that reminded me of water.  truth be told i had a whole other background fabric in mind when i started picking fabric.  it was a directional print and matching the repeat would have never happened.  so the night (yes, i said the night) before i was to leave for Sisters i went and found the blue background fabric.

of course i had to include a pic of that day.

i absolutely love how the ‘cartwheels’ look against the background fabric.  i have had several people tell me they look like life preservers floating in water.  its such a bright and fun quilt.

i fussy cut the frogs in the blocks that i used that fabric in.  i try and do this with other projects.  it so fun seeing them all in a circle.
like most of my quilts i pieced the back of it.  no set plan just get the back big enough for the quilt top.  i quilted it myself on my home machine.  i did a variety of quilting patterns in each Cartwheel.  it was a good quilt to work on for improving my quilting techniques because i was not giving the quilt away.  that whole favorite fabric thing again.  i also used the same color of thread in the top and the bobbin so the quilting almost creates another pattern on the back of the quilt.  at least that is what i tell myself.

i am very happy with this quilt and i love it.  i pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and i am pleased with the results.  this quilt brings back happy memories of that trip and the class.  when i look at it i can’t help but smile.

Bloggers Quilt Festival – Mini

i know its been forever since i have written a blog post.  lots and lots of life going on over here.  selling my house which took 100+ days but is finally done.  packing and putting things in storage with no idea as to how long they will be there.  settling into my new space which is much smaller then my house was.  also dealing will multiple family/life issues and work.  whew.  so that is my story and i hope to be here more often now that things/life are starting to slow a tiny bit.

so when i was reminded about Blogger’s Quilt Festival i knew i wanted to enter a quilt or two into it.  i went and checked out Amy’s website and saw that there is a Mini Quilt Category.  i knew right away which quilt i wanted to enter into that category.

my Mini Northern Lights quilt
measures 13″ x 16 1/2″

i picked up Jaybirds Mini Hex N More ruler and this pattern when i was on a recent trip to North Carolina.

i knew i wanted to use my Tula Pink stash for this quilt.  so i went digging and came up with some Neptune, Salt Water and Nightshade.  i am so funny about my Tula fabrics.  i both love and hate to use them.  silly i know.  i want to keep them forever but i also want to make things with them.  do you all have fabric that you feel that way about?

i reasoned with myself that if i make a mini quilt with it that i can hang it on my wall and enjoy it and not worry (as much) about it wearing out with use.  i know total dork.  quilts are meant to be used and mine do get used.  blah. blah. blah.

i had fun putting the fabrics together and sewing up this quilt.  it was a quick fun mini quilt to make.  now i can see why mini quilts are becoming so popular.

funny story.  my brother and his family were home for a visit while i was working on this quilt and my brother asked me if i bought the rows of the 8 fabrics already sewn together.  when i told him no and that i cut each piece out using the Mini Hex N More ruler and sewed them together my brother told me i was nuts.  LOL
i did single fold binding on this quilt which is something that i have never done before.  i also hand stitched it down which i normally don’t do but since there was only 59″ to bind i thought i could handle it.

i even used some Neptune on the back of the quilt.  i quilted this by just following the jagged lines of the seams that the pattern makes.  i really am happy with it.  it shows off the pattern well.

thanks for stopping by to check out my Mini Northern Lights quilt.  please hop over to Amy’s Creative Side and check out all of the quilts in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival Quilt

i gave a lot of thought to which quilt i wanted to share on the Blogger’s Quilt Festival this fall. i had a couple to pick from but one just kept coming back to my mind. it still is my favorite quilt that i have made to date.
i know you have seen it before but you get to see it again.

‘The Oz Quilt’

i made this quilt by following a quilt along from Julie over at Jaybird Quilts.

Julie taught us how to make hexagon blocks without using ‘Y’ seams.

i used Neptune from Tula Pink for this quilt.  that was really when i first fell in love with her fabric.  its a layer cake with Kona Navy for the setting fabric.  i also used a honey bun for the postage stamp boarder.

i pieced the leftover honey bun strips into the back of the quilt.

i had one hexagon block left which i turned into a label and put it on the back of the quilt.

the quilt measures 70″x90″ and i quilted it myself.
i learned a lot from quilting this quilt. it took me some time to get around to doing it. i think because of its size. but, i just focused on it a section at a time and worked my way through it and it eventually got done.

so why the name?  The Oz Quilt?
i have never actually been to Australia a.k.a. Oz, but i have spent a lot of time there in my mind while reading a story someone wrote.  i fell in love with Australia through that story and in particular Port Douglas and Ten Mile Beach.

i looked at the quilt when it was all done and that name came to me and i thought it was perfect for this quilt.  the colors remind me of the water.  the fabric is called Neptune.  but most of all i can see this quilt in my mind on Ten Mile Beach in Australia.

defiantly an item on my bucket list.

happy sewing.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival

last fall i put a quilt in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival over at Amy’s Creative Side. it was so much fun looking at all of the different quilts that people entered into the show. i was afraid that i missed it this year but i just jumped onto Amy’s blog & see that i still have time to enter. the next question was – which quilt? i sewed a lot this past weekend and decided to show you all my oldest wip that i finished. so without further ado…… here it is.

sort of a wonky picture of it but its pouring down rain & i can’t get out to get a better pic of it. i got the fabric 2 years ago (i think) in a great quilt shop in Florida. it was a fat quarter stack that the shop put together. i ended up finding some yardage somewhere along the way & i ended up with this quilt. i know that i had started out with a pattern but i messed it up in the middle of it & so i just renegaded it & ended up with this. i quilted it myself with all over swirls in a green thread and i am pleased with how it turned out. one of the most fun things about this quilt isn’t the front of it.

its the back.

i used absolutely every scrap of fabric i had left over from the front to piece the back. i ended up having to add some brown kona just to get it big enough. the back is almost like a 2nd quilt. i love it.

so, there you have it. my spring 2011 Blogger’s Quilt Festival entry. no long story behind it. it just took me awhile to get it finished. now that its finished i am wondering why i waited to long to finish it. wonders never cease.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival

this is the quilt that i have picked to share with you for Amy’s Blogger’s Quilt Festival. i have never shown this quilt on my blog before because i made it prior to even starting a blog. i made this quilt about 3 years ago when my SIL was pregnant with my 1st niece. my SIL is a HUGE butterfly fan & when they picked the theme of the nursery and it was pink & browns with cute little bugs in the bedding print i knew i had to make this quilt for them.

the pattern is all done in brights but that just wasn’t going to work for a little girl so i head to the Buggy Barn when i was in Spokane for the weekend and picked from their Sherbet line of fabric & started on this quilt. the background is all pieced squares & the butterflies & bugs are all appliqued on. i used my machine to do the applique and i love it. this quilt is hanging over the changing table in my niece’s room and she knows that ‘aunt anna’ made that for her.

totally love this pic of her.

of course she is bigger now and the joy of our lives.

********

the great thing about this quilt is that my brother & SIL are expecting another girl in March & so my new niece will get to share in the butterfly quilt as well. i can only hope that this quilt will be one of those that will get past on to the babies of future generations. as i type this i am beginning to wonder if i put a label on it or not. i will have to check with my SIL & if not that will get add to the to do list.

********

i hope you have enjoyed this quilt as much as i have & make sure & check out the other quilts over at Amy’s Creative Side for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.
