A Memory Keeper

awhile back i was in searchof a container to keep some items and memory’s in.  it couldn’t be just any old container because they are not just any old items and memory’s.  they are things that have a special meaning to me and i wanted them treated as such when i stored them.
so off i went in search of the perfect container.  i found lots of options out there.  the majority of them being the plastic type.  clear plastic or colored.  those wouldn’t work.  way too generic for me and my stuff.  so then i remembered seeing the pretty storage boxes at a local craft store.  so, i went there.  they did have the pretty storage boxes in various sizes.  the problem.  they only had two patterns.  a victorian themed one and a floral themed one.  neither of them spoke to me and told me to take them home.
what was i to do?
i pondered the idea for some time before it hit me.  if i can’t find what i want at a store then why the heck can’t i make it.  winner.  winner.
that is exactly what i did.  i made my own special container to keep my special mementos in.

i found a box that would work and some fabric from my stash that i love but didn’t have a plan for.  i only had 1 yard of it so i had to make it work.

then i got some Mod Podge and a brush.

i also picked up some polyurethane to protect it and give it a nice finish.

add all of those things together and i ended up with this.

my very own, one of a kind storage container.

for my special items and memories.

i added a ribbon to help with keeping the box closed.  i made it long enough so that i didn’t have to re-thread it through the slots each time i got into the box.  you can see in the pic above that i had to piece some of the fabric on the inside of the box.  i am ok with that.  to me it gives it some character.
i love how it turned out.  i love that its totally me.  but most of all i love that my special things now have a place to call home.
so, when you can’t find something that you are looking for stop and ask yourself ‘can i make that?’  nine out of ten times there is a chance you can.

Happy Mail

i love getting mail.
doesn’t really matter what it is.  i just love getting mail.  i know i am a little strange like that.  last week and this week i got wonderful mail.  what is better then getting fabric in the mail?  well….  maybe one thing but that’s another post.  anyways, back to getting fabric in the mail.  fabric that you won is even better then fabric you bought right?
last week in the mail i got this Moda Bella Solids jelly roll from Sarah over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  i am in love with it.  it is right up my alley.  i have no idea what i am going to do with it yet.  maybe just stare at it for awhile.  it was a giveaway prize for H2H.  if you don’t know what H2H is then you need to hop over to Sarah’s blog and read all about it.  the jelly roll was contributed by Sue who blogs over at Sue Daurio’s Quilting Adventures.  thanks Sue and thanks Sarah for putting together H2H.

then this week in the mail this amazingly wonder fabric showed up from Heather who blogs at {House} of A La Mode.  Heather was doing a giveaway of an entire FQ set of Laurie Wisbrun’s new line Perfectly Perched from Robert Kaufman.  its not even released yet.  for some reason that makes me smile.  lol.  it should be out by late spring or early summer.  i am thinking that i need to make a bag with some of this fabric.  i am in love with the chair print – both patterns.
to enter this giveaway you had to make Heather laugh.  so, i shared an irish joke with her that Someone shared with me.  it made her laugh hard and its a good joke.  so giveaways are not always randomly drawn.  sometimes the entries are for the bloggers entertainment.

Another 1st

another 1st
my second niece turn 1.
her birthday was earlier in the month but the family party was this past weekend.  with them living out of town and crazy schedules its just how it worked out.
hard to believe she is 1 already.  i was at quilt camp last year when the call came that my SIL was in labor and we made the mad dash south.
i love this little monster.

I am……

i am still alive…….
i have been busy with life.  it some how seems to get in the way of my sewing.  ugh.  stupid health issues.  none the less i have been back to quilting.  i made this deal with myself that i can’t start a new project until all of my tops are quilted.  what was i thinking?  i don’t think i was thinking at all………….  the good news is that i finished quilting another one today.
here are the 6 that i have done so far.

the question now is do i quilt more or do i start putting the binding on these?  also, if i have the fabric, the pattern and the project stated in my head (months ago before this deal i made with myself) does that count as starting a new project?  wondering minds (mine) want to know.  i am itching to start putting these Swoon blocks together…….
note to self – don’t loan out your camera to your brother who goes on a trip to Mexico and doesn’t give your camera back for a month….  no matter how many times you ask for it back.

What I have been up to……

life has been crazy with a lot of different things.  from work.  to family.  to friends.  to everything.  that is life.  a little bit of everything all of the time.  i have done some sewing since the last time i have posted.  quilting to be exact.
i have knocked out 5 quilts and i have the 6th one ready to go.  if i have counted correctly i think i have 7 more to do after number 6.
i know.  how does this happen?  i get so excited about sewing together a top that is all i do.  what good is a quilt if it isn’t quilted?  so, i have made a deal with myself.  no new quilt projects until i am caught up with my quilting.
noticed i said quilt projects.  doesn’t mean i can’t throw a pair of pj pants or a new bag or tote in there along the way.
i am in the middle of the stretch of quilting – looking forward to the downhill side of it.  then.  i must face binding these quilts.  ugh.
one thing at a time.
happy sewing.
WIP Wednesday

WIP Thursday

slow & steady…
that is how things have been around here.  i am still fighting this head cold/flu bug.  i am starting to think its never going to leave me.
i have done a little sewing.

i did work on a bee block that was suppose to be done in January.

a spider web block.

this is the next quilt that i will be quilting.  a top that has been finished for some time now.  i have several of those tops.  i need to get them quilted so i can start on a new top.  i have several swimming around in my head right now.

this being one of them.  the Single Girl quilt.  i have cut out all of my templates & i have started cutting out the fabric.  its something i can do while i am resting.  i am a really bad sick person.  i hate more then anything to lay around & do nothing so i trace templates & cut fabric.
i did finish my Spice Market Tote.  i have used it & its huge.  i have plans to make the smaller size one as well.
happy sewing.

WIP Wednesday

hi everyone
not a very productive week.  i have been a bit under the weather.

i did finish up this bag.  which i had put the handles on backwards so i had to unsew.  then re-sew the handles on & add the lining.
bright & cherry on the inside.

i was going to use this fabric to make another bag like the one above but i have decided to make the Spice Market Tote out of it instead.  i think that the owls will be fun in this bag.

i started another scarf with the left over yarn.  i needed to do something while i rested & so this has been it.
i also started on block #6 of my Quilter’s Journey quilt.  i am sure it will take me about 6 months to get this one finished.  hahahaha
happy sewing.

New Additions

here are the new additions that i added to my stash last week.  they all came from The Quilting Bee in Spokane.
left to right.  lining, handles & outside of bag.
left to right. lining, handles & outside of bag.

which bag?  the Spice Market Tote for both sets of fabric.  i have had this Single Girl pattern for awhile now.  i wanted a project that will take some time but yet one that i will enjoy.  this was the winner.  i hope to work on my templates soon.

pretty sure this will be a bag of some sort.  not sure which one yet but i had to have this fabric.

you all know that i love me some Sweatwater fabric.  i had to have this layer cake of Reunion.  i am thinking of Julie’s Circle Around quilt with it using this grey Kona.
i also picked up a basic brown Kona & another good brown blender fabric.

last but not least.  backing fabric.  favorite thing about the Bee is its sale hall.  40% off of this.  love it.
i think this is a good addition for the beginning of 2012.  now i just need to get some sewing done.
happy sewing.
WIP Wednesday

WIP Plus 3

hey there everyone.  i am still here.  i have just been traveling for the past week & didn’t take my laptop with me & since i haven’t figured out how to do a blog post from my phone this post is late.  better late then never as they say.
i did get some projects done since i have last posted.
i bought this flannel last fall when i was at a mini quilt camp with the Renegades in McCall.  i knew what i wanted to do with it & just finally got around to doing it.  no surprise pajama pants.
the flannel matches the flannel in a quilt that i made a couple years ago & i still have this quilt.  sort of fun to have pajama pants that go with a quilt.  its a perfect match for snuggling & since we now have snow here……

i also finished this scarf.  i knit.  something i do every now & then.  it was the first time i followed a pattern & did something other then the basic knit stitch.  it was a fun scarf to make & i did un-knit a few times when i had realized i had done a row wrong.  un-kitting is just about as much fun as un-sewing.  anyways.  this scarf was a gift for Someone special to me.  i know that they will enjoy it & use it which makes me smile.
i was in Houston last week & while i was there my sewing machine was at The Quilting Bee (one of my favorite shops) in Spokane getting serviced.  it was in great need of some TLC but i just couldn’t part with it.  since i flew out of Spokane to Houston it worked perfectly to have my machine service while i was gone.  i picked it up yesterday along with some new fabric.  smile.  i can’t wait to sit down & sew.  its like getting a new machine after they service it.
check back here soon.  i plan on posting some other things i have been working on as well as my fabric purchases that i got.
happy sewing.
